A Legend and an Oscar Icon

The news that Billy Crystal has returned to host the Academy Awards for the ninth time — and the first time since 2004 — brings back a flood of memories for many Oscar junkies: His trademark opening musical medleys and movie spoofs. His easy, joking rapport with A-list movie stars. His nimble ability to play both to the room of Hollywood industry insiders and to the worldwide television audience of movie fans.

Crystal last presented the Oscars in 2004, although he appeared briefly at this year's ceremony, hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway - and received a standing ovation from the audience.

Academy president Tom Sherak said in a statement he was 'thrilled' that the comedian was returning to the Oscar stage.

'He's a comic legend and an Oscar icon and it feels good to have him back where he belongs,' Sherak added.

Murphy resigned as Oscars host after Brett Ratner - who directed him in the current movie Tower Heist - quit as producer of the show.
The director stood down after apologising for a gay slur he used during a question and answer session at a screening of the film.

Film producer Brian Grazer, who has been brought in as his replacement, also said he was looking forward to having Crystal back on the show.
'Like so many others, I've been eager to see Billy host again,' he said. 'It's very gratifying that he agreed to do it with Don (Mischer, co-producer) and me at the helm.'
